GMCRO was established in 1976 to cover all ten Greater Manchester metropolitan areas: Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan. The Record Office holds a wide range of archives, including comprehensive collections on the textile industry, including periodicals (e.g. Textile Weekly, The Textile Recorder etc.), family and estate papers, business records (e.g. British Textile Employers Association, 1866-1971) and trades union records (e.g. National Union of Textile and Allied Workers). GMCRO also holds a wide range of newspapers, maps and plans, press cuttings and photographs, including the Documentary Photographic Archive, which contains many items on the cotton industry.
