The Textile Institute is a unique organisation in textiles, clothing and footwear. As the chartered professional institute for these sectors it exists to serve the interests of its members and the industries in which they work. The Institute has around 6,000 individual and corporate members in over 90 countries, the membership covers all sectors and disciplines in textiles, clothing and footwear. Within the global textiles, clothing and footwear industries the aim of the institute is to facilitate learning, to recognise achievement, to reward excellence and to disseminate information.

The word "textile", which originally referred to woven fabrics, now covers the broad field of products made from fibres. The scope of The Textile Institute covers all the textile industries which include: fibre, yarn and fabric manufacturing; dyeing and finishing; production of knitwear and making-up of clothing; footwear production; manufacture of carpets, soft furnishings and other household textiles; manufacture of textile products used in engineering, agriculture, medicine and other fields; and the distribution and retailing of textile products to personal and commercial markets.

In pursuit of this aim the Institute engages in the following activities:

• Presentation of medals, scholarships and student bursaries
• Organisation of conferences, exhibitions and seminars
• Publication of leading journals and authoritative magazines and books
• Provision of business information
• Recruitment
• Maintenance of a comprehensive library
• Sector specific Special Interest Groups
• Regional and national membership groups
