Cotton is used extensively in home furnishing because of its versatility and because it is bright, durable, hygienic (easy to wash and iron) and comparatively cheap.

Cotton sheets have a cool clean feel. Candlewick bedspreads and cellular blankets are soft and warm. Chintz curtains and velveteen or brocaded upholstery are fashionable. Cleaning materials such as dishcloths and dusters are made from cotton fabrics. Tablecloths, towels and throws come in attractively printed ranges. Christie's of Manchester, renowned for their terry towelling, had the honour of supplying nappies for the children of Queen Victoria.
