Cotton Evidence Convicted Crippen

Most people know that Dr. Hawley Harvey Crippen was arrested in Canada after a wireless message was sent from the ship he was travelling on. How many know that a vital piece of evidence leading to his conviction was in fact a pyjama jacket that wrapped the dismembered body of his wife, buried in the cellar of his house at 39, Hilldrop Crescent.

Crippen maintained that the unidentifiable body could have been buried at any time before 1905 when he took possession of the house.

The pyjamas buried with the body were labelled "Jones Bros. Ltd. Holloway" therefore were proved to have been manufactured after 1908, when Jones Bros. became a limited company. A buyer for the company confirmed that the pyjamas were delivered to Dr. Crippen in January 1909.

As the prosecution maintained, WHO could have buried the jacket in that house during the next twelve months, and WHO WAS MISSING WHO COULD BE BURIED IN IT?

The jury took just 27 minutes to convict him of murder, and he was sentenced to death.
