Ancient civilizations and spectacular landscapes await you on the first leg of the journey aboard the "Cotton Trader" sailing South out of Liverpool loaded with a cargo of manufactured goods such as cotton cloth, guns, brass, cutlery, beer, beads and glass destined for markets on the Atlantic seaboard of Africa (modern day Sierra Leone, Senegal and Nigeria) - otherwise known as the "Dark Continent"

Look on the map to find some of the ports of call (the modern names of the countries are in brackets)

Senegambia (Senegal-Gambia)
The Gold Coast (Ghana)
The Windward Coast (The Ivory Coast)
Sierra Leone
Bight of Benin (Nigeria)
Bight of Biafra (Nigeria)
Central and Southeast Africa (Cameroon and Northern Angola)

You will moor at the harbour in the ports of Fort James, Freetown and Sherbro here the ship is quickly emptied of cargo, wealthy African merchants are eager to exchange the goods. Once the sale is over the empty holds are ready to be loaded with a new cargo ready for the next leg of the journey - can you guess what the new cargo might be?
