Manchester Jewish Museum tells the story of the Jewish community in Manchester over the last 200 years. Through photographs, objects, documents and room settings, visitors gain an insight into the lives of the individuals who came to the city in different waves of Jewish immigration. They can listen on telephone handsets to memories of the community from earlier this century as recorded by some of its inhabitants. The Museum opened in 1984 in the former Spanish and Portugese Synagogue which was built in 1874. It is the oldest surviving synagogue building in the city and has been restored to its original splendour with Moorish decoration and fine stained glass windows. The former ladies' gallery upstairs houses the permanent exhibition of Manchester's Jewish history, while an extension, once used for the Festival of Tabernacles, is now the setting for temporary displays on different aspects of Jewish Life.
Shop
The Museum Shop sells a wide range of artefacts, educational materials and gifts. These include postcards, souvenirs, books and, for the hard-pressed teacher, our popular Fact and Activity Packs. Covering all the major Jewish Festivals and Rites of Passage, these loose-leaf, cross-curricular, photocopiable Packs, in both English and Welsh and at both Key Stage 1 and 2 and Key Stage 3 and 4, can save hours of preparation time. Please send an A5 stamped addressed envelope for a copy of our Catalogue of Educational Materials.
Disabled Access - yes to the ground floor
Help for Visually Impaired Visitors
Visually impaired visitors can be guided around the permanent exhibitions with the aid of an audio-guide that can be carried in a lightweight personal CD player. Clear route information ensures their safety and a lively narrative, with a tactile element, enables them to enjoy the exhibitions. Ask for the audio-guide at the shop. A large print version of our general information leaflet is also available at the shop.
